In Praise of the Humble Apple

Wildpress apples

Orchards were once common sight on our small island.

From farmhouses to grand stately homes, most villages had one or more orchards within their bounds. Apple trees were often the favourite fruit bearer of choice and many traditions such as wassailing, apple bobbing and even scrumping (pinching apples, more often than not to make cider) hail from the humble apple orchard. Loved by birds, bees and insects alike, apple orchards date back to Roman times, meaning apple trees have always played an important part in the rich biodiversity of this country.

However, as commercial farming intensifies, more and more orchards and their traditional British apple varieties are disappearing every year.

We’ve been working with our friends at Wildpress for a while now to fight back and buck this declining trend, supporting independent growers and sustainable orchards who grow lesser known apple varieties and protect ancient orchards at risk of disappearing.

Together with Wildpress, we’ve created our own exclusive press with our pure, all natural apple juice. By paying a fairer price for the fruit, we are able to help farmers invest in more sustainable, regenerative and biodiversity boosting practices which, in turn, help support the wildlife and nature around them.

Silky smooth and delicate in flavour, our pressed apple juice is made with organic Falstaff apples by our friend, Ed, at Hall End Farm in Herefordshire. Growing and pressing the apples for our juice has allowed Ed to experiment with some pioneering nature-friendly farming practices in his organic orchard.

We hope that your apple based enjoyment will be even sweeter knowing that you’re supporting nature and a more beautiful, biodiverse future with every sip and bite.
